Students using emergent strategies
The nature of the learner
Students working with emergent strategies may be able to:
- say some number words
- relate some number words to the process of counting
- identify, name and represent some numerals
Students working with emergent strategies are yet to develop the skills required for true counting. They are working towards:
- counting collections of up to ten objects
- coordinating number words with items when counting, matching one number word to one item
- labelling collections by understanding that the last word we says when counting tells us the total amount
- identifying, naming and representing the numerals 0 to 10 or beyond
- forming conceptual models of numbers connecting symbolic, verbal, concrete and visual
representations between 0 and 10 - reproducing the correct forward number word sequence between 0 and 10
- reproducing the correct backward number word sequence between 0 and 10
- effortlessly identifying (subitise) small quantities
