Students using emergent strategies

The nature of the learner

Students working with emergent strategies may be able to:

  • say some number words
  • relate some number words to the process of counting
  • identify, name and represent some numerals

Students working with emergent strategies are yet to develop the skills required for true counting. They are working towards:

  • counting collections of up to ten objects
  • coordinating number words with items when counting, matching one number word to one item
  • labelling collections by understanding that the last word we says when counting tells us the total amount
  • identifying, naming and representing the numerals 0 to 10 or beyond
  • forming conceptual models of numbers connecting symbolic, verbal, concrete and visual
    representations between 0 and 10
  • reproducing the correct forward number word sequence between 0 and 10
  • reproducing the correct backward number word sequence between 0 and 10
  • effortlessly identifying (subitise) small quantities
